The wild Yaak is a rugged and remote landscape in northwestern Montana, deep in the Kootenai National Forest. Carved out of the Southern Purcell Mountains by the Yaak River and its many tributaries, the Yaak Valley is a biologically rich landscape harboring an astonishing variety of wildlife and pockets of old-growth forests.

Far back in the high elevation wetlands of northwest Montana's Yaak Valley — hidden away on the Kootenai National Forest — is a vast and ancient forest referred to as Black Ram, named for the logging project scheduled to clearcut it. The giant trees include cedar, hemlock, subalpine fir, 315-year old spruce, 600 to 800 year old larch.

Yaak Valley was a significant mining region in northwestern Montana in the 1880s. There's an old bridge below the Yaak Falls that miners used to get to Sylvanite (a mining town) from Troy. Several other placer mining camps, such as 'Snipe Town', operated near the falls.
